Understanding Knee Ligament Injuries

The knee relies on four major ligaments — the ACL, PCL, MCL, and LCL — for stability. Ligament injuries range from mild sprains (Grade 1) to complete ruptures (Grade 3). They typically result from sudden twisting, impact, or excessive loading of the knee joint, and are common in contact and pivoting sports.

Causes

  • Sudden twisting or pivoting movements
  • Direct impact to the knee
  • Awkward landings from height
  • Falls or motor vehicle accidents
  • Excessive valgus or varus stress at the knee

Symptoms

  • A popping sensation at the time of injury

Diagnosis

Assessment includes specific ligament stress tests and joint stability examination. MRI is the gold standard for confirming the ligament involved and the degree of injury. Grade 1–2 injuries are managed conservatively; Grade 3 ruptures often require surgical review.
